Lip Service

NY Times: Do the Republicans Even Believe in Democracy Anymore? They pay lip service to it, but they actively try to undermine its institutions. By Michael Tomasky
The aggressive gerrymandering, which the Supreme Court just declared to be a matter beyond its purview; the voter suppression schemes; the dubious proposals that haven’t gone anywhere — yet — like trying to award presidential electoral votes by congressional district rather than by state, a scheme that Republicans in five states considered after the 2012 election and that is still discussed: These are not ideas aimed at invigorating democracy.

We've been discussing the drift to authoritarianism among the GOP base for years. We now see it in all its wretchedness. It will get worse now that it is heavily armed with automatic weapons and spoiling for a showdown. The mass shootings will turn into massacres as these folks try to ignite full-scale conflict and Civil War here. It's just a matter of time.

Yeah, this genie is not going back in the bottle. IT's out more than ever. It would not surprise if some yahoo nutjob or two or three cause some serious damage and grab the headlines for a cycle or two.
