Obama Surprises

I'm sure Obama's detractors believe Obama is going to the place where he belongs for being the ISIS sympathizing, communist Islamist, Constitutional violatin'... whatever, that he is. Regardless of the fringe right which apparently is now almost all of the right, this is a big deal. This is a president who is actually showing some concern for the poor and the down and out. When was the last time you saw that from a president.

NBC News: Obama to Visit El Reno Federal Correctional Institution in Push for Reform
... the first sitting president to see inside a federal prison.

America has the largest prison population on the planet. Not exactly a measure of success is it? Many of the prisoners are in prison due to minor drug offenses. You can still be sentenced to 20 yrs. in jail in some states for possession of a joint. In many of those same states you can carry a concealed weapon or own a military style semi-automatic weapon like an AR-15 or an AK-47. Makes a lot of sense doesn't it?

I'm reading the NYT article I got here somewhere and this guy got his third strike for stealing a pair of white cotton socks, no stripes on the socks mind you. So he gets 20 something years. That's f-d up in my book. There needs to be very extensive reform. Sure lock up the bad guys, but 20 something years for stealing socks, no. Considering what prison life is like, what's the difference between that and some of the medieval torture devices, not much really. Our torture is slower.

I'd had hoped Richard Nixon was going to be the 1st American Pres. to see the inside of an American prison. Had that happened we might be better off today. Instead, we let him off the hook and I think that sent a message to anyone running for Pres. there after that you were indeed above the law, no matter what you did. The next 40 yrs. showed what a mistake that turned out to be.
