Apart from the culinary uses, burdock root is also well-known for its medicinal qualities, not just the root, every part of the burdock plant is said to have medicinal qualities. It is one of the most ancient roots which is known to cure a number of ailments. In the earlier days, burdock root was known to purify blood by clearing toxins from the bloodstream. It was also known to treat many skin diseases like psoriasis and eczema. Chinese medicine made use of burdock root for treating measles, tonsillitis, colds and sore throat, by combining it with various other herbs. They also made use of burdock root as an aphrodisiac, to treat impotence and barrenness.

Indians and Russians believed that burdock has qualities which can help in treating cancer, recent research has proved that burdock root indeed has anti-cancer properties and can also control the growth of tumors. According to the German scientists, fresh burdock can kill disease causing fungi and bacteria, due to some chemical properties present in it. This root can treat flaky and dry skin disorders, caused due to system imbalance. Not just that, it can also stimulate digestive juices and bile secretion, which makes it useful in treating anorexia.
