The Market On Monday
Good morning. It is 40 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The past few mornings have been especially chilly with frost in the air and cold plants everywhere. I hope you had a good weekend and were able to decompress from the previous week. We are back at the starting line. I just got back from the chiropractor, and so I am well 'adjusted' and he says I am neurologically ready for the week. We shall see about that.
At 8:25 a.m. futures are slightly down, the dollar is mostly up against major world currencies, and the price of oil is down. If I'm guessing, and I am guessing, I would think the market opens lower.
It has just been revealed that Spain is now technically into another recession with back to back quarters of negative GDP growth or rather shrinkage. Needless to say investors are freaked. Spain joins the U.K. in this new recession. It is the proverbial double dip and it blows.
Essentially U.S. corporate first quarter results have been tantalizing delicious and so in spite of the Eurozone crisis which more than likely will see more nations back in recession, the markets remain fluffy and buoyant.

Good morning. It is 33 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The mornings have been chilly but the day quickly warms up. The morning walk went smoothly except we are trying to work on the new dog's habit of barking. Food is the key. We divert her attention, try to get her away from the object of barking with a high value treat. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. Another key element is to make sure that the dog is hungry - breakfast comes later.
At 8:00 a.m. futures are flat, the dollar is down against major world currencies, and the price of oil is down per barrel. The market is poised to open in a lackluster mixed type of way.

Good morning. It is 41 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. This morning's walk was a little on the chilly side but the effect was good, the new dog is right by my side as I type and she is sleeping. A good dog is a tired dog and this one needs a lot of exercise to wear her out. As we know people are endlessly interesting. Lately I am beginning to think that most can go into one of two categories, people that thrive on conflict and people that thrive on cooperation. There are people that seek out fights, verbal and/or physical and there are people that want everybody to get along respectfully. It may very well be another aspect of the authoritarian brain versus the sane human brain...

Good morning. It is 41 degrees and for the time being sunny here in Upstate NY. I woke up expecting to see it raining as the weather logos indicate, but surprise the sun is out and it's bright. I have to admit I am looking forward to the hot temperatures of summer. April is flying by, the tree leaves are about 70% there, we're ready for the heat.
At 8:15 a.m. futures are modestly higher, the dollar is down against major world currencies, and the price of oil is down per barrel. The market is poised to open slightly higher.
In addition to the busiest week with regards to first quarter corporate earnings reports, investors will also be parsing through data on home pricing and new home sales today. As we know the housing market is another major sector of the economy that is lagging in the alleged recovery.
Yesterday's dramatic fears of political unrest in Europe were slightly quelled today as both Holland and Spain went through the paces of bond sales without much fanfare.
Notice that the DOW continues to hover around 13,000. One suspects that the conditions on the ground do not merit its further rise or at least a significant rise, as investors seem satisfied in maintaining that number for the time being. 13,000 is a fluffy number.

The Market On Monday
Good morning. It is 39 degrees and raining here in Upstate NY. I hope you had an excellent weekend. My weekend was active with the highlight being dinner at a phenomenal restaurant on Saturday night. I had the salmon with the Creole shrimp topping, and yes it was delicious. Plus the basketball gods were good letting my NY Knicks beat a very competitive Atlanta Hawks team on Sunday afternoon. The playoffs begin very soon.
At 7:50 a.m. futures are holy crap significantly down, the dollar is up against most major world currencies, and the price of oil is down per barrel. The market will open with a steep decline.
What a difference a day makes. After tremendous optimism being expressed in the financial articles on Sunday about how investors would be more than likely pleased with a week filled with better than expected corporate results accompanied with an increase in the indexes, we shift into reverse gear right off the bat on Monday.
So much for optimism.
Europe and China are back in focus. Europe is going through not only a debt/ financial crisis but also political turmoil with both France and Holland about to change leaders. Wall Street likes consistency, not change. Holland may also be on the edge of losing its pleasing triple AAA credit rating. China on the other hand is reporting a small slowdown in its monolithic manufacturing complex.
Something tells me that if the corporate reports continue to come through above expectations then today's losses will be recouped later on in the week. That's a bold prediction.

It's In The Details
A housing development is being built locally.
I walked through the project and couldn't help but notice a design detail that is not well thought out.
First off they are using facade chimneys, which is fine. This is not a problem.
Next, take a look at the installed facade chimney which presents two problems.
Notice that directly under the chimney is a facade window. Would we really build a window directly in front of a chimney.
Also notice that the chimney is installed too close to the edge of the roof. If we follow the lines of the facade chimney, the implied imaginary chimney would bust through the side of the entire structure. The chimney would come through the window directly below it.
I'm not really a critic of architecture, I just like the logic to make sense.

At this time last year we were up to our eyeballs in water, this year we are experiencing the signs of drought. So although we were planning on more garden preparation this weekend we prefer seeing the rain.

As you know, up to this point first quarter reports have for the most part beaten expectations, consequently the tone of the financial articles indicates that earnings are in focus for the time being. This year could be different as many are less fearful of the eventual next recession occurring in 2012. In fact some sentiment still indicates that the US is more into a slowly improving recovery. Good morning. It is 53 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. It is perfect walking weather, dog and I hit the streets earlier logging in our 2.5 mile walk. She is sleeping as I type so some of her limitless energy was subdued. The newly revamped chiropractic attended body is slightly less bent at the hips, we are standing straighter. That stuff really works.

The investment articles appear to be describing a happy day on Wall Street just before the weekend. First quarter reports have exceeded expectations, and today seems to be about sitting back and counting the cash as more corporations no doubt will continue their high profit Q1 reporting. While the country marinates in the the acidic residue of the worst recession, Wall Street is doing phenomenal business.
Gee, how come the job creators are taking a hiatus from job creation. The job creators are so sensitive, even the suggestion of raising their taxes to fair pay levels sends them scurrying into their pewter lined nests.

Good morning. It is 33 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. It is allegedly going up into the 70s today and that will be just lovely. Yours truly will be making another visit to the chiropractor so I am mentally preparing myself for the cracking of bones. It is helpful both the preparation and the cracking.
At 8:00 a.m. futures are ever so slightly higher, the dollar is mostly down against major world currencies, and the price of oil is up. The market is poised to open higher but...
Initial weekly layoff claims will come through at around 8:30 a.m. and a poor showing could tilt the market.
Otherwise, investors were pleased with another wave of bond sales in Spain, so for the day the Eurozone crisis is in check. Investors will also be parsing through more first quarter reports along with data on the housing market. It could be a bumpy day indeed with lots of metrics in the pipeline.

Lately the weather has been perfect and just in case you are a NY Knicks fan, they were perfect last night in defeating the Celtics with a barrage of three pointers from Smith and Novack. Somehow I sleep better when the Knicks pull off a solid win.

Investors will be looking for corporate results to spark the movement and direction of the market today. Notice that leftist anti-Iraq war protestor scurge Halliburton will be reporting today and no doubt that report will exceed investor expectations.
I think many of us are still waiting for the second major coming of the recession, yet surprisingly that arrival keeps getting pushed ahead.

The Market On Wednesday
Good morning. It is 56 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The weather logo indicates scattered showers, we shall see. Back in the 90s I came across a very good chiropractor. I would see her periodically and she would do a nice job of de-kinking the back and neck. Unfortunately she moved out of town and long story short I dropped off the chiropractic table. That was about 15 years ago. Long story short again and I am recently back on the table, loose unhinged hip part and all. I must say, what was I thinking for letting all that good body work go. The neck is already better, the mid-back is better, lower back - a little bit better, range of motion is better. I found my chiropractor and it's good stuff. This is a chiropractor friendly blog.
