Lead Paint

I can tell you without hesitation that lead paint is all over the place. There are probably millions of structures in the USA and around the world that have been built prior to the mid 70s when lead was removed from paint.

Guardian UK: Baltimore warns that children are at risk of lead poisoning from paint - After seven homes certified as lead-free were found to be contaminated, doubts over inspections mean 384 families have been urged to have their children tested

I live in a 30's house I bet it's soaked in lead from the roof on down.

A few years back all contractors, including yours truly, had to take a lead paint certification course. There were lots of procedures for working on lead paint areas. That was something that GW Bush initiated but the problem was there were no lead paint police to enforce it only rumors of huge business busting fines. Those rumors scared us and we fell for it, ponying up $350 for 8 hours in a classroom and a certificate that said we were compliant. All that fell away real fast and a few hustlers made a killing collecting fees from people like me. I can tell you that if you have everything painted with latex paint or new paint of any kind you're probably in decent shape. It's the unused areas that could be a problem - basements, attics, etc.
