The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 33 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The lamb part of March has not really arrived, it's more like the wild penguin. The weather logos are promising temperatures in the 50s in the next week and that will indeed feel like a heat wave. We are under duress here in this part of the country, the relentless winter of '14 has pounded us into a frigid delirium.

At 8:40 a.m. futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open in a mixed area.

Turmoil is the highlight of March think Ukraine. The market has gone down and up and right now appears modestly stable for a day or two. The big news arrives on Friday when the job creation numbers for the month of March are revealed by the Federal government. That is always a milestone report. Many times the market remains relatively flat until that data arrives but there is always room for a modifying factor to suddenly arise and shake it all up.

CNN: Stocks: Ending the quarter on the up
There is little economic or corporate news on the docket Monday, but investors are gearing up for a busy week which concludes with jobless data Friday.

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is 34 degrees and raining here in Upstate NY. The weather logos are promising temperatures in the 40s and 50s into the near future. I can't say for certain but it's beginning to look like Spring might be taking hold. I'd say about 70% of the snow has melted away and the ground is looking raw, brown, and soggy. Maybe the lamb is here although no one would be surprised to see Winter come back in some short form.

At 8:40 a.m. futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

It's been a tepid period for the indexes right from the start of the year up to the present. This morning investors are pleased to see that consumer spending and income rose in February, yes that would be right through the heart of the relentless Winter of '14. Also they are predicting that the E.C.B. will make a positive calculated move next week to counter potential deflation in Europe. It could be a good day.

CNN: Stocks: A strong end to a 'meh' March?
The first three months of 2014 have been bumpy and it's possible all the major indexes could end the quarter in the red. The Dow Jones industrial average has declined by 1.9% since the start of the year.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 20 degrees and partly sunny here in Upstate NY. Winter continues. The weather logo is promising above freezing temperatures during the day for the next week with today going up into the 40s. Could this possibly be it? Could we possibly be at the toehold beginning taste of Spring? Last night a few friends were over and everyone was saying the same thing. This Winter has been relentless and we are worn out and worn down from it. I know you are too.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are ever so slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is slightly up. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

Even though the market is set to open flat to higher, don't trust it. It could be a rough day. There's a lot of data out there about the banks that failed the Fed stability test including Citi. On the other hand, the TBTF banks exist in their own private but vast global economy, one which does indeed trickle down to how money flows in and out of our hands. Perhaps that is the real intent of Reagan's nonsense trickle. It means that the economic points of power - TBTF banks and shadow banks control our money flow.

Everyone I talk with mentions the same thing about how this Winter has taken it's toll, we are weary of the cold. Here's my prediction - no Spring, just a jump to strong heat.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 17 degrees and cloudy here in Upstate NY. Yet another day in the unrelenting Winter of '14 as the frigid cold remains. The weather logos seem to keep adjusting by promising warmer temperatures in the next week as if to try to maintain our withered spirits. We will believe it when we see it. I am beginning to think that this year we might skip over Spring and go directly into Summer. It could happen in our new world of climate change.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is slightly higher. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

The market is allegedly in a March doldrum period. It seems to equate to the stagnant and unrelenting Winter somehow. Today investors will parse data on housing and consumer confidence. We are confident, are we not.

Most everyone around here has had it with the cold. Meanwhile the relentless Winter of '14 continues, unabated.

At 8:40 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is slightly up. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

I am reading that the overall mood of the market today is neutral. I've read that many times before and do not trust it. On the days when stagnation is predicted you often get big swings. Several initial public offerings are coming up this week. It's hard to get involved with those if you are a small time investor, on the other hand, the unproven nature of the IPO is volatile so why bother.

The Drought

This is more or less a repeat of my post on the drought from yesterday. I reiterate that this drought is one of the major stories going on right now. If you listen to NPR you have noticed that the news stories on food prices and vegetable shortages in the USA are more common. With the price of food already beyond many people's means, one might expect that that situation will worsen, food will become pricier and more people will not be able to get it. Throw into that equation the right wing's insistence on cutting out food aid and with a possible return to a GOP Senate in 2014 you have the means for more starvation in the wealthiest country on the planet.

Investors are weighing two major world events - the annexation of Crimea by Russia and how that will affect Russian and virtually all Western countries, and Janet Yellen's first meeting as head of the Fed. How you might ask can we equate these two things. The answer is that this is viewed strictly from the investment and world economy point of view AKA how does this effect profits. It looks like there is a little more uplift to go after Monday's intense rebound. Of course how it all shakes out at the closing bell is another issue.

CNN: Stocks: Investors hope for more gains

Good morning and Happy Saint Patrick's Day. It is 12 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The relentless Winter of '14 continues to suppress the common good and hope of the ordinary people for a warm Spring. Some of the snow cover melted away on Friday and Saturday leaving small sections of brown frozen lawn exposed. Because of the melting on those days and the super cold at present we have lots of hard ice. It's not really a snow covering although it looks like it, it's really hard crusty ice at this point. Persevere in the face of cold, Northeastern people of America, we will see Spring in time. We will prevail.

Who knows why the market is presently poised to open higher, but it could be a sign of steady as she goes. On the other hand, I am going to take a serious look at Plug Power. Also with first time weekly layoff claims at a rare low number there is something here to hang one's hat on.

CNN: Stocks: Edging higher but caution remains
On the corporate side, Plug Power will report earnings before the open. It's a highly speculative stock that's enjoyed a massive run as of late and was continuing to climb in premarket trading.

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 36 degrees and lightly raining here in Upstate NY. The weather logos are promising warmer temperatures from the radical freezing February and early March temperature jail except for tomorrow when it will get bitter cold once again. We are beginning to see the brown ground here and there as the thick layer of snow very gradually recedes. Every season and area has its bright spots and downfalls. One thing that Upstate NY has in abundance is water.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are moderately down and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open moderately lower.

Investors are juggling weaker economic and new monetary policy news out of China. As we know China is a big hit in the investment world with its incredible year in year out GDP as the world's producer of "goods". When China's economy is lightly rattled the markets react negatively and this is today's pre-market situation.

CNN: Stocks: China concerns hitting sentiment
(China) had experienced its first-ever corporate debt default. Some analysts believe more defaults could be in the pipeline.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 30 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The weather logo is promising a temperature later today approaching the 50 degree mark. Okay, okay we'll take that. Certainly the spring birds who are chirping like its mid May will enjoy that too. The thing of it is when I look out the window of the dining room where I'm presently sitting and typing, I see a world of snow out there. If you took a picture and labeled it late December, it would work.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is flat. The market is poised to open in the slightly lower to flat area.

Investors appear to have digested the Ukraine mess for the time being. Now that we are into it a few weeks, it's old news, more like a troubling split made apparent and with concerned observers just wanting to see the official divorce decree made public. The CNN article suggests calm in the markets, we like that, we like calm. We could use calm as an answer for all sorts of economic and political problems for a few days. Imagine Washington DC and the word calm associated with it especially in light of the screaming partisan crazed divide. DC take the cue from Wall St, embrace calm for a few days.

CNN: Stocks: Is the market calm here to stay?
But Tuesday sees little scheduled economic and corporate news that could drive markets.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 30 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The weather logos continue to show a very modest warming trend in this part of the world. We are beginning to see bare spots on the ground where snow has melted away but we are still looking at quite a bit of white out there. I hope you had a good restoring weekend as we all ponder what type of week this one will be and what new outrages and revelations the world will provide.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

Global economic fear fallout from the Ukraine mess along with the monstrous calamity of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 have brought a slight chill over the five year bull market. We shall see how the markets digest and respond to this prominent news over the course of the day and the week.

Otherwise, there's little U.S. economic or corporate news on the docket Monday.

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is a frigid 10 degrees with grey clouds here in Upstate NY. The polar lock down freeze continues. The weather logo is promising above freezing temperatures later today and if that occurs that will be the first time we've felt it above 32 degrees in a long time. I've got my shorts and t-shirt ready because I expect it to feel like a heat wave. We've got the light back, we could now use a little warmth.

At 8:40 a.m. ET futures are slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

This just in - U.S. economy added 175,000 jobs in February, Labor Department says. Unemployment rate was 6.7%. In my opinion this is a miserable number however it beats the paltry expectations of "chief economists." As usual the number will be rung up the flagpole and either praised or eviscerated depending on one's political leaning. How the markets react is as of yet unknown.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 8 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The frigid polar air mass remains planted over the northern US, and it remains, remains, remains...Okay, it completely blows and everyone is going crazy over the temperature plant, but the logo is promising warmer temps in the future. Are these logos really just false info intentionally placed there just to somehow or other make us feel better. I guess cold brings out the paranoia too.

At 8:40 a.m ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is lower. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

Investors have eased up their weighty concern over the Ukraine mess. This is allegedly causing some temporary stability and less volatility. Okay that's good. The big deal now is seeing how the ECB floats it's interest rate. Ah yes, mundanity has temporarily returned.

While the crisis in Ukraine remains unresolved, U.S. investors now seem to feel relatively insulated, believing the worst-case scenario of a full-fledged war is unlikely.

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 19 degrees and lightly snowing here in Upstate NY. The Bull Winter of 2014 continues on. I am startled, amazed I tell you, to see the weather logo suggesting that the temperature will go into the 50s on Monday 5 days from now. It will be like a scene from an Apocalypse movie, with millions of people coming out of deep dark shelters, squinting their eyes at the sun - a perplexing peace has suddenly arisen throughout the land. On cue, everyone kneels and prays, the celebration, dancing, and merriment soon follow...

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open flat to lower.

It's not bad enough that the global economy is rattled by the Ukraine - Russian mess. There's more. ADP has just reported a less than stellar creation of jobs in the month of February. Recall that ADP puts out their report a few days before the all official government jobs report in February due on this Friday. Double whammy day - Ukraine is bad, jobs are bad. Initially the markets might dip but hope always springs eternal.
