saw it. Very disturbing Movie on many levels. I think Eastwood is very clearly trying to say these people (all of them) our are cultural enemies. But, it has other even more disturbing dimensions though. I'd say its ironically also an antiWar movie because it creates such a vivdly and starkly real view of how War dehumanizes everyone involved. Eastwood's "Hero" is also an anti-hero. He sees himself merely as a guy doing his job and in so doing saving the lives of his fellow soldiers. The problem is he's obsessed by his job a workaholic that seems to like killing anything living that he deems a threat and he goes looking for these creatures. He shoots a snake and then a child and it gets easier and easier to kill people as the story goes on and this man does tour after tour. It reminds me of other War stories like the Deer Hunter where you have an obseesive even crazy soldier who gets addicted to the high of danger and killing. Another more recent movie The Hurt Locker comes to mind and its anti-hero a bomb disposal guy seems to have the same obsession that Chris Kyle has. The over reaction of many on the right to any criticism of this movie and its "HERO" reminds me of how these same people reacted after 9/11. No criticism of BV$H 2 was allowed and he used that space to go to war where he wanted to and this movie was one of the results of that same dark energy and that same faux patriotism and desire to crush debate and analysis of what they deem sacred and beyond anything more then idol worship. Disturbing deeply disturbing.
I'm not an Eastwood fan especially since his idiotic chair routine at the GOP convention. His politics are suspicious, at best, to me and I can imagine that his movie has an agenda. Look at the results with more anti-Islamic fervor after the movie is viewed. I'll wait to see it on Netflix or not at all. I'm also not interested in disturbing movies especially at a theater, that's a shitty night in my opinion.
I reread my comment, I didn't mean to imply that people should not go to disturbing movies, it's only my reaction. I'm a likes easy entertainment kinda guy.
I wouldn't call the movie entertainment exactly. Its really propaganda if you ask me. Its not going to change anyone's mind about the war in Iraq though, if that's its goal. I've noticed lately that the right is very diligently trying to do just that through movies, special shows and TV series even whole networks on cable like the Military channel and AHC or American Heroes Channel. They twist history around on all these outlets and as a fan of history its very scary to see what their up to.
