In the past few years I've learned a lot about alcoholism, rehab, AA, programs, etc. I have two new friends that have gone through it all and have come out the other side intact. Alcoholism is a paralyzing problem and it is everywhere, in all classes, shapes and sizes, ages and levels of education. It is pervasive. I hope that Hamm's revelation somehow helps those who are on the edge of seeking treatment. It can work, it's not easy, but I've seen people who have made it work and made it last.

Terrible disease, ruins whole families.I put diseases of the brain like this one as a special category. Addiction, depression, Alzheimer's , dementia etc. all effect those around the individual and are therefore not just confined to the person. In today's society they are all treated as failures of the individual and to a large part these folks are sadly ostracized and sequestered. In olden times they were thought to be in league with the devil. Moral judgments are still placed against the majority of addicts and they are eventually imprisoned not treated.
I spent most of my life pretty much unaware of the implications of alcoholism. It's intense and yes it ruins families, individuals, so much. There is so much trauma in not just our country but globally from this. It's mind boggling. I would agree moral judgments do not belong here, not with this stuff.
One wonders why more societal / medical resources have not been deployed to conquer this horrific condition? The destructive force of this addiction has laid entire societies waste. Criminalization (prohibition) just made it worst and took what was essentially a social / medical problem and turned it into a criminal issue.
