Yes, this is different for an outfit like CNN. I thought it was of course unbelievably tragic, but when compiled in the news it is powerful in showing the depth of the problem. Gun violence is here, it's epidemic, and nothing is being done to address it in any substantive way. The right seems to believe everything is fine and that this is somehow normal which it of course most certainly is not. This is a social disease and it is eroding society in another way.
Of course the 2nd amendment has be co-opted and distorted from it's original intent. But the rugged individualism of cowboy culture is in our Hollywood DNA. It is inconceivable to even gun control Americans to imagine that we could not be a gun owner society like Britain.
The shootings are ever growing in number, in quantity as it were. So at what point do people take serious notice? When it's twice what it is now? Three times?

It looks terrible when complied, but is not atypical of a USA weekend. To paraphrase you, "it's shocking that we're not shocked"

I think we take serious notice when the flood waters are at our door, even though we watched the storm roll in.
