We're There

Washington Post: This is not a drill. The Reichstag is burning. Opinion by Dana Milbank

With his repeated refusals this week to accept the peaceful transfer of power — the bedrock principle that has sustained American democracy for 228 years — President Trump has put the United States, in some ways, where Germany was in 1933, when Adolf Hitler used the suspicious burning of the German parliament to turn a democracy into a totalitarian state.

I don't know about Germany in 1933 as an analogy but I think were looking at a super version of 2000. Trump's problem is that elections are not a Nat'l project as much as a State by State project. If the Dems. are taking his threats seriously now and I think they are having to watch the horrifying way he has dismissed the deaths of over 200K Americans the last 6 mos. I think they're now very awake to the possibility that trump intends challenge any election no matter how badly he loses. In his view the other side aren't the opposition they are the enemy to be treated as such. So, we are already in a sense in a Civil War that might become very UnCivil in 40 days. How that would look is probably already in front of us with the BLM protests and his response. My guess he would invoke the 1920 Insurrection Act and send in the Feds. to his rescue claiming the Dems. are staging a coup against him and therefore the election results are null and void. Anything is possible with this monster. Welcome to the bottom of Wonderland coming up fast.

This thing has helped put me in a foul mood, I'm pretty worried about where we are headed. The one thing that is positive is that Biden continues to lead, and depending on the day his lead translates to a very solid victory. We shall see. We know Trump's character and we know he'll try anything, he's just so ugly. My hope is that Biden has a solid victory and after a few days of Trump's cult acting out in disgraceful ways, that the dust settles. This is possibly the best case scenario.

Jim, I'm sorry to say this but I think were not going to get out of this so easily. Trumplandia is a a very REAL place the way Nazi Germany or Fascist Italy or Franco's Spain was its a make believe fantasyland where the Dictator and his sycophants echo each others thoughts and emotions and accept crazy conspiracies as reality. Its a very very ugly place where cruelty is applauded as strength and people's lives mean nothing if they conflict with dear leaders survival as Dictator of Reality. Trump doesn't lie he weaves he is the ultimate BULLSHIT artist weaving a reality for his followers to live in. He's a Psychopath. My shrink once said to me the difference between a neurotic and a psychotic was that neurotics create fantasy homes in the air but Psychotics do that as well, but they actually move into and live in them. Imagine this idea on a grand scale! That was NAZI Germany , Stalinist Russia, Maoist China, Franco Spain etc. We are the precipice here. These places rarely end peacefully. Usually to break the spell the Dictator needs to DIE!
