I've mentioned this before , but if all the coal burning stopped tomorrow in a few yrs. the amount of global warming would spike upward and rapidly. The reason is counter intuitive given were always told Coal is the biggest single cause of the excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Coal also puts large amounts of SO2 ( Sulfur Dioxide) into the Stratosphere and SO2 acts like a trillion tiny mirrors reflecting back large amounts of sunlight and it's heat into space. Once we stop burning the coal this stuff will wash out of the air via rain within a few yrs. Then all that sunlight will return and the CO2 left from the coal will still be there to hold in the absorbed heat! So, we've basically painted ourselves into a corner on this one. Both the CO2 and the SO2 need to be removed at the same time. Trouble is we don't have any way to do both or even one. Nature will do it over geologic time, but that's not going to save us in the short.
