Putin is the last Soviet. Like Hitler he's a revanchist that wants Russia to be the new USSR and without owning the Ukraine it can never claim that title again. Putin is a classic Russian Imperialist like Stalin and the Czars before him. It was a quirk of history that it was Russia under Yeltsin that dissovled the USSR and it was under Yeltsin that the Ukraine gained it's Independence 32 yrs. ago. Putin never accepted this arrangement and has dreamed of reuniting Russia with the Ukraince since he took power in 1999. He will either go down trying or God forbid destroy the planet trying. He cannot beat NATO and us in a conventional ground war . This war shows that clearly. But, Russia still posesses 6K nukes ready to be used against us and this war is all the excuse Putin needs to deploy and fire them at us if he feels as if he's going to lose power. Cold War 2 is every bit as dangerous as Cold War 1 that ended in 1991.

The former ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch has been warning us about Putin and that he would indeed use nukes. But they say his position in Russia is weaker. I would also suspect many in Russia don't want any part of this damn war including very powerful people. The next year barring an all out nuclear war, will push and pull on Putin's hold on power. It is possible he could be removed.
