Russia lost 24 million people in WW2 it never had any effect on Stalin and the deaths in the Ukraine aren't going to have any effect on Putin. He frankly doesn't give a shit what his people want or are angry about. Except to use it against anyone that tries to protest. He's going to fill the gulags and prisons back up.
Russia in a sense is in the middle of its own battle at governance. I would suspect the stage is already set with people trying to figure out how to remake Russia now. It's going to take time, but right now I think Putin is under great pressure from within.
