What's interesting to me is that it takes a lot of intelligence to find these divisive wedge type of laws and then enact them. It's unfortunate that the sense of humanity in it's totality is lacking from that intelligence package. It reminds me of war planners who think of dead soldiers and dead civilians as collateral damage, it's void of any sense of human feeling. Instead it's purely objective type of thinking/intelligence that can't even foresee any possibility of consequences. We see this same type of 'intelligence' over and over from the right. More than likely, it's the same team of people as well.
I believe it was very thought out to enshrine the most reactionary religious views in the State. Its an obvious overt attempt to turn the US Constitution on its head in particular the idea of religious liberty. Religious liberty is being shrunk down by these people to mean that they have the right to shun, hate and discriminate against anyone who doesn't agree with them and their views. Its just a not so clever way to protect the hatred of others. Unfortunately, many of these businesses and services I see these days that openly and loudly label themselves as "Christian" are no more then modern example of the old Jim Crow mentality. Let these kind of laws stand and very soon you'll see no Gays water fountains and bathrooms etc. No, this kind of hatred has to be stomped out in the public realm. You can't stamp it out of the hearts of people , but you can make damn sure their meanness and hatred doesn't become enshrined in law!
Ed, I completely agree. We attribute all these fine qualities to politicians but most of these guys and gals are severely lacking. I suspect the number one quality necessary to be a politician is narcissism.
Glenn I think you've written a superb summary of the situation.

It strikes me as a nasty / petty form of retribution for not getting their way on these issues at the Nat'l level.

You don't have to be that smart to be a politician.
