I'm not surprised that we've moved to the hard right as the economy has tanked. Its easier for the masses to blame poor people for the mess then rich. They look at the rich and they think, "he must be doing something right." They look at a homeless person and they see bad behavior poor choices etc. The reverse might in fact be true. The rich person could be living on ill gotten gains and the poor person could have been the victim of the scam the rich person has perpetrated on him. How is the average viewer supposed to know?
The tactic you describe which is to blame the poor is, as we know, used brilliantly by the GOP to infuriate white people especially the men. The economy that has redeveloped after the great crash of 2007 places far more emphasis on more stringent debt and payment collection along with keeping wages low, making jobs infinitely more competitive and less available, anything but the alleged trickle down nonsense. So people are strangled and as we know health care is profoundly worse with harsh payments and such and the list of strangling economic add ons that have been put in place increase the difficulty to simply survive if you are not an elite wealthy person. Blaming the Democrats for this is absurd although they are complicit. This is primarily a GOP led activity. 18% of the population has just voted in a GOP Senate, they say Romney is leading in 2016 but I am slightly skeptical. Americans in general remain poorly informed and the ever popular FOX contributes to the lowering of the bar. All of the types of momentum that we are witnessing in my opinion will only increase in the coming years. There are pockets in the country where people gather to live more democratically.
