John Clark

John Clark is among the most unique indie music artists presently on the scene and one of the most unique I have come across in some time. Hailing from Missouri, John is producing a very broad and deep catalogue of genre bending and genre combining music that runs across a wide swath of styles and feels. John is a modern Zappa with a lot of heart and soul and none of the cynicism.

John is a renegade in that he is constantly defying the rule of the pop music world. Instead of producing carbon copy formulaic songs, John seems to intuitively and organically find musical forms and shapes that complete his ideas. It takes a lot of integrity to do that. Let me try to explain it again. A visual artist could do twenty paintings of a still life, or a visual artist could choose to redefine their technique and style with each new idea. John Clark is a lot more Duchamp than Georges Braque, more Picasso than Giorgio Morandi. Braque and Morandi made still lifes, Duchamp and Picasso continuously explored new uncharted territory.

John Clark is a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. His range as an instrumentalist covers soaring and burning electric wah guitar solos, to psychedelic acoustic folk guitar, to mandolin and uke, to synth textures of all types, to complex and artfully simple percussion. Get the idea. Vocally John covers by my estimation a solid 2 1/2 octave range, with some songs exploring the low range areas and some songs his higher range. What is John’s secret sauce? He's a very high energy man who wants to embrace the world and the world of ideas.

Listen to the two embedded pieces and I'd like to add one more little facet about John’s music that is subtle and maybe not so instantly recognized in the music mix. It’s the sounds of nature that John sprinkles into his music, literally sounds from the outdoors. John has a true appreciation for nature and it’s tiniest of creatures, like the cicada. In a time when the animal world including the all important insects are in decline, it’s good to run into a man who loves and respects that world.

Clockwork

With a highly inventive, imaginative, and expressive style that captivates the mind and heart with equal strength, John Clark’s neo-psychedelic approach to music is bound to leave a long-lasting impression. Through wildly adventurous and ambitious ideas that explore the limitless potential of all kinds of genres and music, John creates genuine art through an extraordinary fusion of true skill and pure sound.

Embracing the bizarre every bit as much as the beautiful, the impressively organic sound of John’s vivid and vibrant music contains textures that feel real enough to reach out and touch, with dynamic and versatile elements that curiously float right from the speakers and into the soul. Designed stylistically for bold contrast to thrive, haunting melodies to blossom and creativity to enter uncharted areas of music in effort to compose sonic structures that sincerely keep listeners guessing just as much as entertained – John Clark is an enigmatic performer and an artist with an authentic penchant for the aural experience.

Each album has documented the process of an artist unafraid of the journey to the center of himself – but perhaps what’s most important, is that John Clark is willing to share what he finds there, with you. Always ready, willing, and able to connect through the music he makes, the real magic of John Clark’s sound is in the way that it resonates right at our very core, like it’s always been a part of us, all along.
