Whole groups of people have been abandoned in this economy so they've turn to cheap Heroin for ease the pain of poverty and despair.

Many of those addicted follow that pattern, yes, but there are quite a few who are better off and some quite well off that are also addicted. Addiction is suffering but it is also possible to get clean and move ahead with one's life. I know several people who are doing great now.
