It Gets Worse

My Latest

My Latest NY Times comment -

In very general terms, Trump entered the race last year and was highly regarded as a joke candidate. Recall Jon Stewart or any number of comedians salivating at the idea of a Trump campaign knowing full well that the man was the source material for endless jokes and laughter.

Over time the media attention and in particular in my mind, the violence at his rallies seemed to change the perception of Trump. He went from joke to feared demagogue and worse, someone who would unleash ‘the basket of deplorables’ on America. He would give demagogic approval to the deplorables to force more violence, more hate, more irrationality, more divisiveness, and be free of thoughtful careful policy, fine character, basic reasonable decorum, and even the fundamental human emotions of empathy and compassion.

Right now I think there’s another shift occurring. He is indeed the laughingstock, he is the joke source. It's back. The media is less enthralled with his potential validity as a candidate. We’ve gotten more familiar with his supporters and understanding little by little what they seek and why, and how they learned these things. That divide remains, Trump added fuel to it and this is his miserable legacy. The debate was the exclamation point though. Trump is utterly unprepared, utterly ill informed, utterly ill tempered, he’s seeks revenge over embarrassing sideshow escapades and pours endless effort into them. It's pathetic.

NY Times: No Debate That Hillary Clinton’s Polling Numbers Are Improving by Nate Cohn

'Miss Congeniality'

Reactions To Trump's Machado War

From Business Insider - "A rational candidate, coolly focused on what message he could send to best win over voters, would understand that there is nothing to gain by arguing about whether Machado is a good person, let alone about whether her weight gain was "a real problem." "But Trump is not rational. He's on tilt."

From NBC News - "There's no small amount of irony here. As mentioned earlier, Trump regularly makes outlandish claims based on unnamed or nonexistent citations — whether it's the "extremely credible source" who told him Obama's birth certificate was forged, or his false claim that TV footage exists showing "thousands and thousands" of Muslims in New Jersey celebrating the 9/11 terror attacks. He even defended tweeting fake crime statistics spread by white supremacists to smear blacks, telling Fox's Bill O'Reilly the source — Twitter user @SeanSean252 — was "supposedly an expert."

From Slate - "Trump’s capacity for no-holds-barred shaming of anyone and everyone should give voters cause for deep concern. Even worse, perhaps, is the fact that he can’t stop himself from bullying people even when it’s not in his political interest. His feuds with the Khans and Machado make him look like a cartoonish mob boss seeking sadistic revenge on anyone with less political power than he has. Trump cannot stop punching down until he’s launched every low blow he can dream up. As Clinton tweeted on Friday morning, that’s simply not an appropriate disposition for a president."

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is 55 degrees and cloudy here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a rainy day with temperatures in the high 50s this afternoon. It's the last day of September, time is flying. We are heading into October and the final stretch in the campaign to elect a new president. Trump has had a ridiculously bad week and Clinton is clearly benefiting with a boost in preliminary polls. At some point today we will see real polling on the effect of the debate. I suspect Clinton will get that little bump, maybe a percent or two, and that little bump will give her a definite positive push in the swing states.

At 9:20 a.m. ET futures are ever so slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is slightly up, now trading close to $48. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

It's the end of another month. Next week we will get important numbers on September job growth or lack there of. This morning it is Germany's Deutsche Bank that is under pressure and is pulling Eurozone stocks lower. This seems to have had a ripple effect on Wall street this morning.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 55 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a partly cloudy day with temperatures in the 70s this afternoon. According to Five Thirty Eight's Nate Silver preliminary reports indicate that Clinton may have gotten a post debate bump. I posted the link early this morning below. She is deserving. Trump is awful, let's face it, this man is the worst thing. But if for some reason the American people in their great wisdom vote him into office, I will be changing my career. At that point I will be writing for every possible website and publication I can. Everybody has got to do something in the event he wins. We can't let that narcissistic megalomaniac wreck the country even worse. Maybe we can get a succession movement started for New York.

At 9:00 a.m. ET futures are modestly lower and the price of oil per barrel is down now trading around $47. The market is poised to open lower.

Lo and behold OPEC agreed to cut production at an meeting in Algeria on Wednesday. Immediately following the news, oil prices rose about $1.50 per barrel. This morning oil prices are slightly retreating because investors think OPEC can't deliver on the deal. Now they want to see evidence and not just emotion. Emotion caused oil prices to rise on Wednesday, today it's about the tangible goods. My own guess is that oil will possibly remain more stable in the $45 to $50 range and if results do in fact come in and the global oil glut lessens, then maybe, and only maybe will it break above $50 per barrel. For the time being though, I also guess/speculate that gas prices might rise by a fraction. We shall see.

Conspiracy Theories 2016

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 57 degrees and mostly sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a partly sunny day with temperatures in the 70s this afternoon. The consensus remains that Clinton won debate one. The horribly immature and decidedly obnoxious Trump spent a good part of Tuesday creating a series of 'reasons' why he performed so poorly. From a bad microphone, which we all heard loud and clear - unfortunately, to a bad moderator, who was about as non present as a person could be, Trump ran the gamut of nonsense. Then he doubled down on his repulsive sexist criticism of Alicia Machado. The man is hopelessly immature.

At 9:15 a.m. ET futures are ever so slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open slightly higher.

The oil talks in Algeria appear to be ending as everyone predicted, with nothing on the table about limiting oil supplies. The can was kicked down the road to November.

He Lost, Period

Politico: Insiders: Hillary won - Eight in 10 agree Donald Trump lost the first debate. But Republicans aren't convinced it will hurt him. By Steven Shepard

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 59 degrees and cloudy here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a sunny day with temperatures in the 70s this afternoon. Well, we were all concerned that somehow Trump would gain the upper hand in the first debate. He did not, in fact Trump failed miserably. His performance was childish, rude, incoherent, and a sniffling mess. After weeks of Trump hitting Clinton over her health, the orange guy shows up at the major moment sniffling like a little baby, and looking remarkably unhealthy. Clinton was poised, prepared, smart, and presidential. Trump will never be presidential, it's hopeless. Now we wait a few days and see if any of this affects the polls. The newspapers of record, unanimously declare Clinton the victor, and for good measure so did all the betting markets, with Clinton's chances of winning in the gambling sector rising. Let's hope that Clinton sees the blood in the water and swoops in to finish off this clown in the next debate, leaving the helpless Trump hysterically shaking like the little petulant infant that he is. Expect Trump surrogates to be on the air all day long attempting to spin the disaster and attempting to clean up the huge pile of dung left by Trump on the collective global conscience.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open modestly higher.

Investors seemed relieved that debate one went Clinton's way with the market reacting positively this morning. It is the big OPEC meeting in Algeria that has everyone's attention. No agreement on oil production will be reached.

CNN: Stocks unruffled by debate; oil down as OPEC meets; Deutsche slides again by Ivana Kottasova

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 45 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts rain later on and temperatures in the low 70s this afternoon. I hope you had a good weekend, I did indeed. Well the day is starting off with a real bang. Looks like the presidential race has tightened even more, and doesn't that just make you feel all warm and cozy. Tonight is, as we know, the big night, with debate number one on tap starting at 9 p.m. ET. Lots of words have been shed in anticipation of this event, I expect a real storm. I wish I had something formidable to say here, but I don't. I believe the country needs to lose its collective mind every decade and blow off a lot of crazed steam. If the country votes in Trump, hang onto your hats, it's going to be turbulent and especially unpleasant. The question is, will the country survive? I suspect the wound will be long and deep, and unfortunately the issues that are really pressing the country and the globe will lay around collecting dust.

At 9:00 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open moderately lower.

Investors will indeed be watching the debate. I will easily predict the country hits a major recession with Trump as his main idea appears to be to run up the national debt. That should essentially kill off what remains of any social programs, and say bye bye to SSI as well. It's going to be a mess.

Science Daily: 'Sixth sense' may be more than just a feeling - Study of rare genetic disorder reveals importance of touch and body awareness
summary - With the help of two young patients with a unique neurological disorder, scientists have discovered that a gene called PIEZO2 controls specific aspects of human touch and proprioception, a "sixth sense" describing awareness of one's body in space. Mutations in the gene caused the two to have movement and balance problems and the loss of some forms of touch. Despite their difficulties, they both appeared to cope with these challenges by relying heavily on vision and other senses.

Global Warming - National Security

Climate Central: Obama Just Tied Climate Change to National Security By Brian Kahn

The White House: Presidential Memorandum -- Climate Change and National Security
Extended drought, more frequent and severe weather events, heat waves, warming and acidifying ocean waters, catastrophic wildfires, and rising sea levels all have compounding effects on people's health and well-being. Flooding and water scarcity can negatively affect food and energy production. Energy infrastructure, essential for supporting other key sectors, is already vulnerable to extreme weather and may be further compromised. Impacts of a changing climate can create conditions that promote pest outbreaks and the spread of invasive species as well as plant, animal, and human disease, including emerging infectious disease, and these can further undermine economic growth and livelihoods. Impacts can also disrupt transportation service, cutting off vulnerable communities from relief immediately after events and reducing economic output. These conditions, in turn, can stress some countries' ability to provide the conditions necessary for human security. All of these effects can lead to population migration within and across international borders, spur crises, and amplify or accelerate conflict in countries or regions already facing instability and fragility.

He's 'Unbalanced And Ill Prepared' - Yup

Politico: Inside Hillary Clinton’s debate prep - The Democrat holds more moot court than mock debate as she prepares to show her opponent as unbalanced and ill prepared. By Annie Karni and Glenn Thrush

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is 66 degrees and cloudy here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a cloudy day with temperatures in the high 70s this afternoon. A lot of the focus of the news media right now is on the upcoming debate. One thing we can count on is that the event will be unorthodox in its nature. We do expect Trump to be compellingly ugly. If you get a chance, watch the 'Between Two Ferns' video I posted on Thursday. I think it's a riot, others might not agree so much. Regardless, it's an opportunity to see Clinton in a slightly different context, but I must admit she is a reserved person, and she is conscious of her expressions and actions. Clinton is very intelligent and she is also very aware, she has a high degree of self awareness. She works hard at attempting to speak with caution, but she does screw that up now and again as we know. Trump on the other hand has virtually no self censoring devices, which apparently is appealing to many. They say he speaks his mind, I say he's a boorish individual. I mean let's face it, anybody can say crude things, what exactly is the trick there. I find it a major flaw in his character, one of many actually.

At 9:15 a.m. ET futures are almost flat and the price of oil per barrel is down, now trading around $46. The market is poised to open in the flat area.

Oil is on investors' minds as there is an upcoming OPEC meeting next week. Allegedly the OPEC people will discuss the idea of a production freeze, which, if it happened, would send oil up probably around another, oh I don't know, perhaps as much as $5 to $15 almost instantly. Let's say it would definitely solidify the $50 trading range. But, that won't happen. OPEC meetings are also allegedly a pointless activity. Expect the meeting to fall apart with many disagreements. So look for oil to drop to around $40 by next Friday, this is all pure poppycock speculation on my part.

CNN: Stocks and oil lower; Fed members speak; Yahoo sinks by Alanna Petroff
Oil prices and stocks have been closely correlated over the last year or so. And oil is moving based on expectations about what may happen at an OPEC meeting in Algeria next week. Oil producers are talking again about whether to freeze production.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 59 degrees and it is sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a sunny day with temperatures in the 80s this afternoon. It's the first day of Autumn and for many of us it's our favorite time of the year. I think it traces back to the first days of school and all the possibilities of young romance. Remember being in 6th grade and having a terrible crush on that special person. Do that every year during your formative time and it sticks with you for decades and decades. Also it's such a celebratory time, even though I've never been on a hayride in my life, the thought of it is appealing. Plus Fall is about the apples, apple pie, and cider. So far they, the apples, have been pretty good too. As we know, it's going to be a helluva ride this Fall with the election and our fragile political system so maliciously divided and screwed up, replete with absurd ideas, fake information, screwy notions, and brimming with hatred, fear, and contempt. Okay so there are a few things working against this Autumn but take a few moments to appreciate what we do have.

At 9:00 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up now trading around $46. The market is poised to open moderately higher.

I'm going with the consensus. Investors liked hearing that there was no base interest rate from the Fed on Wednesday and today their getting their freak on and enjoying it. On the other hand, there's never a guarantee that monetary emotion holds an entire day of trading together.

Poll Roundup

A survey of the polls this morning, Wednesday September 21st

- The NY Times has Clinton with a 75% chance of winning.

- Five Thirty Eight has Clinton with a 57% chance of winning.

- Daily Kos has Clinton with a 63% chance of winning.

- Predict Wise has Clinton with a 72% chance of winning.

- The Princeton Election Consortium has Clinton with an 81% chance of winning.

Generally speaking Clinton supporters might wish to see the percentages higher, but considering the numbers, imagine if Clinton were in Trump's position.

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 63 degrees and sunny here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a sunny day with temperatures in the 80s this afternoon. It is the last official day of Summer, enjoy it while it lasts. Everyone is curious about what type of climate changed Winter we will have this year. Will it be a no Winter like last year, with hardly any snow and more moderate temperatures. Or will we have another extreme Winter like the one from two years ago, with endless snow and extra-freezing temperatures. Who knows. Tough night as people in Charlotte, North Carolina were rioting over the killing of an innocent black man by the police. I'm reading that the cop responsible is a black man. One suspects that a Trump presidency will go along with a lot of rioting.

At 8:40 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up now trading around $45. The market is poised to open moderately higher.

It's a big Fed day as investors wait to hear from Janet Yellen this afternoon. I'm reading that the chance of a base interest rate hike is around 12%. But you never know. The Bank Of Japan is trying out a 0% interest rate yield 10 year bond in an effort to improve their economy and this move is helping to boost markets this morning.

CNN: Japan lifts markets; Fed up next; oil prices rise by Alanna Petroff
All eyes will be on the Federal Reserve's interest rate decision at 2 p.m. ET, followed by Janet Yellen's press conference 30 minutes later.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 68 degrees and it is rainy here in the Upper Hudson Valley, the forecast predicts a cloudy day with temperatures in the high 70s this afternoon. I hope you had a good weekend, mine was busy with all kinds of activities. We had three terrorist style attacks over the weekend and CNN is showing pictures of a suspect in the NY and NJ bomb attacks. Yup, it's a Moslem dude and I fully expect to see more attacks like this for the rest of my natural life. No present or future president is going to stop this.

At 8:45 a.m. ET DOW futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open moderately higher.

Next week we will see and hear the first presidential debate, and there will also be a special meeting of oil producing countries. The meeting is allegedly about limiting oil output and thus elevating the price of oil globally. Personally I doubt anything will come of it, but the next time they meet in say three to six months, then something might happen. Meanwhile oil producing countries are falling into recession as oil prices decline. Nigeria is presently a regular economic recession basket case.
