The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 41 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The forecast is predicting rain right through to Monday. I hope not as I'm performing outdoors on Sunday - maybe not. Regardless it's nice to see the leaves starting to return to the trees. The barren quality is about to lift until the end of October, so hurray for that.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open flat except...

I just read this - "U.S. government says economy grew at a 0.1% annual rate in first three months of 2014, much worse than expected." Yeah, that will throw a wrench in the day. Add to that an expected announcement from the Fed that there will be a further abatement to quantitative easing and man oh man the day could sour really fast. But, stranger things have happened.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 47 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The logos are calling for rain the rest of the week starting sometime today. The headlines this morning are distressing with tornadoes through the center of the country and a multiple shooting incident down in Georgia. There are of course multiple shootings occurring more frequently or should we say regularly and why some rise to the level of national news over others evades me. We are an armed nation and that will continue to escalate as there is nothing in the pipe to abate it only things to encourage it.

At 8:50 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

The indexes have been losing ground over the last month. The article suggests that the last few days of April could be a turning point. As no one can predict the direction of the market, it's as good a guess as any. Meanwhile first quarter corporate reports are the main order of business. The reports have been vying with the Russia-Ukraine crisis in a negative feedback cycle. I'm not sure much is going on to relieve pressure from this relationship other than diplomatic gestures AKA sanctions on Russia.

CNN: Stocks: Emerging from a month-long funk?
Earnings continue to dominate Tuesday's agenda.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 47 degrees and mostly sunny here in Upstate NY. According to the weather forecast we are in for a long period of rain. On the bright side, we are starting to see the beginning of trees coming to life. The crab apples in my backyard are well into getting their beautiful early leaves and there is more green everywhere in general. It still seems a bit cool. We have not put our winter coats away just yet.

At 8:40 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

The market has been slightly rattled by world events especially in the last week. Today the focus is on talk of a few major potential acquisitions. That's a big deal, literally and figuratively. We will see if  it's enough to keep things in the green today.

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is a chilly 40 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. We are still feeling the long drawn out effects of a harsh winter. Yesterday was windy and cool. Hey, it's the weekend. We can all settle into a communal sense of relaxing and resting.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

The first quarter corporate reports continue to come in but it is world events that are rattling the market this morning. It looks like we're having an escalation in the Ukraine-Russia mess. Great. What can we say, we are a warring species. We have not figured out that killing off the enemy especially in a resource grab/political duel is similar to cutting off one's own hand. We like to have enemies as an object of our highly evolved though often not useful anger.

The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is a chilly 39 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The warm temperatures are taking their time making an appearance in these parts. According to a NASA report we read last week, this is the result of man-made global warming. The East is remaining extra cold and the West is into a drought and heat. I would suspect that most people around here have not put away the winter coats just yet. Last night I was out for a walk with the winter cap and gloves on.

At 8:40 a.m. ET futures are modestly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

I'm reading that jobless claims rose to 329,000 in the last week so that might put a little brake on things. Otherwise it's clear sailing. Darling Apple has produced a better than expected earnings report, plus the company is raising it's dividend and they are doing a 7 for 1 split of their stock to bring the $500 per share price down. Tech is doing nicely and so is today's opening. Bottom line - we all could have been rich if we bought shares of Apple at the pit of the recession when it was below $100 a share. We could have more than quintupled our investment.

CNN: Stocks: Buoyed by Apple, Facebook (but not GM)
Apple shares rallied after the company said it was expanding its stock buyback program and increasing its dividend, while reporting quarterly results that beat expectations.

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 43 degrees and rainy here in Upstate NY. Looks like the rain continues through the day. One thing we can say for this present time is that Upstate NY has plenty of water. As global warming intensifies and alters the weather patterns and temperatures around the globe, this area might sneak by on the issue of water. Water of course will become the critical substance over which many people will experience great suffering. This is already occurring.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poisd to open in the flat to lower area.

Investors will continue to see a bevy of first quarter corporate reports and today the emphasis is on tech corporations. Tuesday was a day of gains and so far reports have been good enough to keep the DOW in a lofty area. Business is good, better than anticipated.

Good morning. It is 54 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. I am seeing more of the early Spring yellow blooms now, the forsythia is out. There's still a lot of brown in the landscape and that will stay until we start getting some of the tree leaves. It's coming, that beautiful green lush part of year. We earned it this year.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are flat and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open in the flat area.

Investors will be parsing lots of first quarter corporate reports today with an added emphasis on Big Pharma - better living through chemistry. So far the DOW is remaining fluffy and buoyant, equities are still strong. On a simple sort of calculation, someone who had properly invested $10 in stocks at the bottom of the recession would now have roughly $40. That's quite a gain over a 5 to 6 year period of time. On the other hand with the market presently at an all time high, one wonders how that investment would turn out if made now and that's why there are financial advisers out there to help sort that through.

Good morning. It is 44 degrees and sunny with clouds here in Upstate NY. The forecast has it going into the 60s later, a rather nice day. I hope you had an excellent holiday weekend. Many people gather the family together for the holidays. We had a restful and peaceful time. I indulged in one of my favorite foods, that would be ravioli. I rarely eat raviolis so why not on a holiday. They were delicious.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open higher though some energy stocks might lag.

We are heading full bore into the heart of the first quarter earnings season. This is the telling week. So far the indexes have remained buoyant in the face of some results that fell short of what was desired. By Friday most of the weighty cards will be on the table and one suspects that any possible correction will become more apparent. On the other hand, we could be in for more gains too.

The wind creates all kinds of banging sounds in and out of the house which have literally scared my new dog. She would prefer the calm of a summer or winter day while running in a field. She's the first dog I've owned that reacts poorly to thunder, the noise scares her. All in all though she's still quite a sweet being.

At 8:30 a.m. ET DOW futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open slightly lower.

We are heading full tilt into the earnings report season. Investors are now to decide the fate of the indexes based on the reports. Some of the first reports from the financial sector were not pleasing and now we see if legends like Coca Cola or Intel can push everything into the plus column. This will be a telling week.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 64 degrees and a little breezy here in Upstate NY. I hope you had a good weekend, the weather here was pretty spring-like. I was out jogging a preserve trail on Saturday and it felt great, t-shirt weather. The grass is greening up and the early spring flowers are out. We might even see the forsythia with its yellowness soon bloom.

At 8:20 a.m. ET Futures are modestly lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

Markets were rattled last week especially with poor earnings reports from a few TBTF banks. Let me reiterate a point. When the equities market is rising in value it has little to do with Main Street America, yet when the markets drop, it does effect Main Street. That is as far as I can tell a realistic appraisal of 'Trickle Down.' What trickles down is disaster. Regardless, the week will be about first quarter corporate reports as investors see first hand if the Great Recession Recovery is petering out, possibly just having a poor single cycle, or might even be better than expected if results improve.

The Market On Friday

Good morning. It is 53 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The forecast is predicting rain and it's also predicting we go into the 70s for the next few day starting tomorrow. The wind still reminds us of Winter. We have yet to hit that bright, warm, convincing Springtime day that will do the trick for all of us.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are moderately down and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

After yesterday's literal wipe-out, what else can go wrong. Quite a bit can go sour and sour real fast. JP Morgan's first quarter report has set in motion a significant pre-market drop. The Market On Thursday

Good morning. It is 36 degrees and sunny here in Upstate NY. The forecast predicts a solid Spring day in the 60s with sunshine. We'll take it. Later this afternoon I plan on hitting the mean suburban streets for a lengthy jog and with a little bit less than the 6 layers of clothing I've gotten used to wearing through the Winter. Now that's freedom.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are slightly lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

I am now reading that first time jobless claims for the last week has fallen to a 7 year low of 300,000. That's good news and might push things into the green. Otherwise investors are reacting to less than stellar corporate first quarter reports this morning. The Fed helped things pop on Wednesday preaching super low interbank lending rates. That excitement is now history.

The Market On Wednesday

Good morning. It is 42 degrees and cloudy here in Upstate NY. The logos predict we're in for temperatures in the 50s and 60s in the next week. We are getting there. Yesterday I went outside to examine the area where we have a few crocuses planted. Sure enough, they are starting to pop. Winter is parting but not exactly graciously or quickly, Winter is taking it's sweet old time.

At 8:30 a.m. ET futures are moderately higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open higher.

After astounding gains on Tuesday, the market is now technically ready to parse corporate first quarter reports and minutes from a Fed meeting. Last night stalwart end of quarter first reporter Alcoa showed better than expected results. Now we get to see if this is a fluke, the average, or the tip of the iceberg. We have been pre-warned that expectations are low to dismal but expectations are frequently wrong.

The Market On Tuesday

Good morning. It is 49 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The weather logo is indicating that it will go well into the 60s today and it will rain . We'll gratefully take it, judging from conditions in California this area has abundant water right now and hopefully into the future. As far as water goes, too much is significantly better than too little.

At 8:00 a.m. ET DOW futures are slightly higher and the price of oil per barrel is up. The market is poised to open slightly higher except...

S&P and NASDAQ futures are lower. There is a sense that the upcoming slew of first quarter corporate reports will not meet expectations and in turn that equities are stretched beyond their value. So, we could say that the market is presently in at least a minor correction and perhaps a more significant correction if the fear of lesser expectations is met.

The Market On Monday

Good morning. It is 37 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. Rain is expected later today. I hope you had a good weekend. We are experiencing early Spring, the snow has almost completely retreated, and we are left with the brownness of pre-snow Fall. We've been doing yard work, raking up the missed leaves all the while keeping an eye out for the first signs of a crocus. I find this period to be a bit of a physical and mental adjustment, it's like we are shedding an old skin. The new skin is a little delicate.

At 8:45 a.m. ET futures are moderately lower and the price of oil per barrel is down. The market is poised to open lower.

Right now it's all about anticipation of corporate first quarter reports. The market seems to be readying itself for what is expected to be less than stellar numbers. We've heard this before though, the pessimism of the pre-report period. The proof is in the pudding, the first report is due out later this week.

The government is saying that the US has added 192,000 jobs in March with the unemployment rate holding at 6.7%. This number is an improvement but still short of something to be overwhelmed by. The main point from the investor's point of view is how that number will impact any moves by the Fed to change it's base interest rate and/or quantitative easing. One suspects that the number is not nearly strong enough to do anything drastic.

In the ebb and flow of the market, the market has been flowing this week. Gains is the name of the game.   Good morning. It is 39 degrees and overcast here in Upstate NY. The forecast is predicting sunshine today with a temperature approaching 60 degrees - it's been a long time coming. It's nice to get up and it's not 5 degrees out with howling winds. My yard is practically snow free at this point although the high mounds of snow piled in parking lots still remain.   Well, in spite of our permanent fear of a new recession or major market correction, the market continues to advance. The ADP report which precedes the official government report on job creation in March to be released on Friday, suggests a better than expected number of 191,000 new private sector jobs. That is better, not phenomenal, but better. We are clearly far from a fluid job market period, things are very tight as we know, but there is slight progress.
