Global Warming - The Permafrost

CS Monitor: How taking the 'perma' out of permafrost could accelerate global warming - As permafrost thaws, it changes the composition of vegetation in the Arctic. This could accelerate global warming, say scientists

The big meltdown is well underway in the Arctic, Greenland and parts of the Antarctic as well. All over the planet mountain glacier systems are also melting away as the planet rapidly warms. Our scientists are monitoring this now with an enormous network of satellites, sea and ground based sensors etc. There is no doubt that this is happening, the only unknown is the speed and the types of positive feed backs that will be kicking in as this goes forward. AS for its effects on humanity and our civilization that is also already being drastically effected. Climate is changing, the oceans are rising at rates not seen on Earth in 8 K yrs. and even more worrisome is the rapid acidification of the sea and the release of huge amounts of frozen methane and Co2 from the melting permafrost soils in these areas. The news is bad and getting worse. Doesn't seem to bother those causing it or their peanut gallery. They go on burning away , rising in their SUVs and making like NOTHING at all is happening around them. Ignorance is bliss in their case. What me worry they say?

My understanding is that the initial warming is causing permafrost areas to thaw which in turn eventually causes a release of methane, methane being a significantly more powerful greenhouse gas than CO2. This is a growing feedback loop and it's heavy information to say the least. It's hard to remain optimistic knowing about this stuff and also knowing that nothing is occurring to improve the outcome.
