I've just been reading about some correlations between Dionysus and Jesus, including turning water into wine. It was also a prechristian wow-the-masses hoax with contraptions set up by priests to perform this "miracle." Pretty clear Hellenic influence on Christian mythology though.
Interesting, I didn't know about that one. I really like elaborate hoaxes.
To me the thing to take is that the Apostle John, or whoever wrote about this, just took it out of the air. Water into wine was a known 'miracle' of the day, coming over from the Greeks, and John was building a mythology with what was at hand. It almost would go without saying that Jesus could turn water into wine. I love thinking about this stuff.
